Special Effects on Cards

1) I Am Groot!: You and another Hero deal Attack in your respective Locations.

Groot has four copies of “I Am Groot!” in his deck. An Attack accompanies this effect. So, Groot can deal two damage at his Location and one of his teammates can deal one damage at their Location. Groot’s deck encourages the Heroes to spread out on the board.

2) I Am Groot?: Move any other Hero to a Location adjacent to them.

Groot has three copies of “I Am Groot?” in his deck. A Move accompanies this effect. This set of cards essentially gives Groot and a teammate one Move.

3) We Are Groot: You and another Hero draw 1 card.

Groot has three copies of “We Are Groot” in his deck. One Heroics accompanies this effect. You can draw cards beyond your starting hand size of 3. “We Are Groot” is one of the few effects that allows Heroes to do this, making it a very strong card.

Overview

Groot has the customary Wild symbols: one card with one and one card with two. But he has below average symbols for the rest: Heroics, Attack, and Move. He makes up for this shortcoming with his special effects which grants his teammates the same action, essentially giving two copies of the same effect.

So, Groot benefits from teammates with higher symbols in any of the three main stats: Heroics, Attack, and Move. This makes Groot playable with just about any other Hero.

Good Teammates

Anyone can be a decent teammate for Groot. Someone high in symbols is a great choice. Fortunately, there are plenty of good choices to choose from in the Guardians of the Galaxy Remix expansion. Gamora and Rocket specialize in Attack, while Star-Lord has great Heroics and Move and can generate Wild tokens for his teammates.

If you want to go off the Guardians of the Galaxy theme, Ant-Man, Black Widow, and Hulk from the core set are options. I could include just about anyone else from the core set, too. With his special effects, Groot is the consummate teammate.
